MEP Utility Network Conversion & Topology Validation

Challenge
MEP systems (cables, conduits, pipes, fittings) are critical for operations but are often modeled as disconnected geometry in BIM. Without topological integrity, network tracing and outage analysis are impossible.

Solution

  • Linear MEP elements (cables, pipes) classified by discipline and written to separate feature classes (e.g., USEL_CableUSWN_Pipe).
  • Point features created for fittings, valves, switches, and equipment, snapped to line endpoints for connectivity.
  • Topology rules applied at the dataset level (e.g., USEL_Topology):
    • Points: Must Not Overlap / Intersect
    • Lines: Must Be Single Part / Must Not Self-Overlap
  • Error Inspector used to identify violations; manual fixes applied iteratively until zero errors remained.

Outcome

  • Fully validated, clean MEP network.
  • Each asset retains full BIM attributes (maintenance schedules, lifecycle, tags).
  • Topologically sound data ready for network trace and operational queries.
